One section that specifically stood out to me was when Rick Steves describes his trips to the Holy Land writing, “Travel beyond the Christian world offers us invaluable opportunities to be exposed to other, sometimes uncomfortable perspectives” (20). As I am currently planning a trip to Israel with my mom over Winter break, his words and advice were very intriguing. Israel has never been on the top of my list of locations I desire to travel to, but I’m also not one to turn down an offer of an international trip. Steves’ words about keeping an open mind to discover and experience new perspectives, ideas, and religions will stick with me during my upcoming trip. As a Christian, it will be an awe-inspiring trip to the Middle East, but also an eye-opening one to the practices and viewpoints which differ from the United States. His writing excites and interests me but also makes me a bit nervous for the unknown that awaits me.
